SUBMISSIONS AND LETTERS OF ADVICE

Since the publication of Admin Review 50, the Council has provided advice or made submissions to:

• the Secretary to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs, advising of the Council's view of certain recommendations of the report of the Joint Standing Committee on Migration into the Deportation of Non-Citizen Criminals;

• the Assistant Secretary, Civil Justice Branch, Attorney-General's Department, commenting on the content and use of interpretation legislation;

• the Assistant Secretary, Security Law and Justice Branch, Attorney-General's Department, providing the Council's view of the administrative law implications of the proposed electronic transactions legislation, and on the revised and publicly exposed draft legislation;

• the Senate Legal and Constitutional Legislation Committee, providing the Council's views on immigration legislation and, in particular, on the proposal to limit judicial review of migration decisions by way of a privative clause; and

• the Attorney-General, providing revised advice on the merits review of third-party decisions and assessments, in light of the new review mechanisms that have been established in the area.

Copies of these letters will be reproduced in the Council's Twenty-third Annual Report 1998-1999.
