Appointment of the Inspector-General of Taxation

Mr David Vos AM was appointed inaugural Inspector-General of Taxation in August 2003. As noted in Admin Review no. 55, the office of Inspector-General was created to review tax administration on a systemic basis and report to government with recommendations for improvement. Mr Vos’s previous career includes lengthy periods working in the Australian Taxation Office and as a partner with PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

On 9 February 2004 the Inspector-General publicly released a brief report, Identification of the Main Systemic Tax Administration Issues and Concerns Facing Taxpayers. He has also given indications about reviews that will be accorded priority, including the administrative cost to business of audits and the Tax Office’s administration of penalties. Further details can be obtained from the Inspector-General’s website <www.igt.gov.au>.
