Stirrings

Reconciliation in the Queensland Central Highlands

by Carolyn Cerexhe

On 1 May 1998, Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTaR) conducted a seminar in the Law faculty at the University of New South Wales, sponsored by the Indigenous Law Centre. Fred Conway, an Elder of the Garingbal people, and Bood and Bloss Hickson, brother and sister pastoralists from Queensland’s Central Highlands, told of the bridge building between pastoralists and local Aboriginal people in their area, and of their successes in both sustainable management and spiritual care for the land and its peoples. The also spoke of the invaluable national work of the group Rural Landholders for Coexistence. The seminar was a fascinating event, as the warmth and cooperation between the participants revealed enormous possibilities for coexistence between Aboriginal people and non-Aboriginal pastoralists.
