Electoral Amendment Bill 2014

A Bill for

An Act to amend the Electoral Act 1992









The Legislative Assembly for the Australian Capital Territory enacts as follows:

1 Name of Act

This Act is the Electoral Amendment Act 2014

.

2 Commencement

This Act commences on the day after its notification day.

Note The naming and commencement provisions automatically commence on the notification day (see Legislation Act

, s 75 (1)).

3 Legislation amended

This Act amends the Electoral Act 1992

.

4 Section 34

34 Multimember electorates

(1) The ACT must be divided into 5 electorates.

(2) Five members of the Legislative Assembly must be elected from each electorate.

(3) This section applies for the purposes of a general election held after the commencement of the Australian Capital Territory (Legislative Assembly) Act 2014.

Note The Australian Capital Territory (Legislative Assembly) Act 2014 provides for the Legislative Assembly to consist of 25 members. It applies to the Legislative Assembly constituted by members elected at a general election after the commencement of that Act.

(4) Subsection (3) and this subsection expire on 31 December 2016.

8 Limit on electoral expenditure—party groupings

(2) The electoral expenditure must not exceed the expenditure cap for the election multiplied by the sum of, for each electorate, the lesser of—

(a) 5; and

(b) the number of candidates for the party for election in the electorate.
