AN ACT
to amend the Education Act
1. Short title
This Act may be cited as the Education Amendment Act 2000.
2. Commencement
This Act comes into operation on the date fixed by the Administrator by notice in the Gazette.
3. Establishment and composition
Section 11 of the Education Act is amended by omitting subsection (3) and substituting the following:
"(3) The Education Advisory Council consists of not more than 17 members, including –
(b) the chairperson of the Indigenous Education Advisory Council, or his or her nominee, who is to be the deputy chairperson of the Education Advisory Council;
(c) the Secretary of the Department of Education, or his or her nominee;
(d) an employee within the meaning of the Public Sector Employment and Management Act, who is employed in a college or school as a teacher, including a head teacher, and who is nominated by the Minister to represent teachers;
(e) persons drawn one from each of the following interest groups:
(i) the migrant community;
(ii) trade unions;
(iii) employer associations;
(iv) persons with experience in higher education;
(v) non-Government schools;
(vi) students of primary or secondary schools;
(vii) residents of communities remote from the Territory's main centres of population;
(f) a person nominated by the Commonwealth Minister for Employment, Education and Training;
(g) 2 persons nominated by the Indigenous Education Advisory Council; and
(h) not more than 3 additional persons, of whom not less than 2 reside outside the City of Darwin.".
