The Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory enacts as follows:


1. Short title
This Act may be cited as the Juries Amendment Act 2002.

2. Commencement
This Act comes into operation on the date fixed by the Administrator by notice in the Gazette.

3. Striking jury in criminal cases
Section 37 of the Juries Act is amended by inserting after subsection (1A) the following:

"(1B) A potential juror, or a person who has been selected to be a juror, when giving reasons (whether before or after being sworn) why he or she is not indifferent in the matter or otherwise should be excused from trying the issues on the trial, may elect not to give the reasons in open court and the proper officer –

(a) must ensure that all potential jurors are informed of this right; and
