The Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory enacts as follows:


1. Short title
This Act may be cited as the Local Court Amendment Act 2001.

2. Commencement
This Act comes into operation on the date fixed by the Administrator by notice in the Gazette.

3. Principal Act
The Local Court Act is in this Act referred to as the Principal Act.

4. Appeal to Supreme Court
Section 19 of the Principal Act is amended –

(a) by omitting from subsection (1) "(other than a small claim proceeding)";

(b) by omitting from subsection (3) "(including a small claim proceeding)";

(c) by omitting subsection (4); and

(d) by omitting subsection (8) and substituting the following:

"(8) In this section, 'proceeding' does not include a proceeding under the Small Claims Act.".

5. Regulations
Section 36A of the Principal Act is amended –

(a) by omitting from subsection (2)(c) "the Act" and substituting "this Act, including for inspection and copies of documents relating to a proceeding";

(b) by omitting from subsection (2)(e) "and";

(c) by omitting from subsection (2)(f) "Court." and substituting "Court; and"; and

(d) by adding at the end of subsection (2) the following:
