RADIATION PROTECTION REGULATIONS 2006 (S.R. 2006, NO. 37) - REG 51

Exemptions for depleted uranium

(1)  In this regulation –
depleted uranium means uranium that –
(a) contains less than 0.72% of the radionuclide uranium-235; and
(b) is being used as –
(i) radiation shielding for a container that is designed to contain radioactive substances; or
(ii) ballast in an aircraft or vessel; and
(c) is totally encased in a metallic sheath; and
(d) is in solid massive form.
(2)  Each of the following dealings with depleted uranium is exempt from the operation of section 13(1) of the Act:
(a) possession of the depleted uranium;
(b) storage of the depleted uranium;
(c) transport of the depleted uranium.
(3)  Depleted uranium is exempt from the operation of section 14 of the Act.
