Schedule 1 amended 4 261--1 page i Western Australia LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY Western Australia Day (Renaming) Bill 2011 A Bill for An Act to rename Foundation Day to Western Australia Day and accordingly to amend the Public and Bank Holidays Act 1972 and the Minimum Conditions of Employment Act 1993 and for related purposes. The Parliament of Western Australia enacts as follows: page 1 Western Australia Day (Renaming) Bill 2011 1 Background 2 Whereas: 3 A. The 1st of June in 1829 was the day when the first 4 European settlers, under the command of Captain James 5 Stirling RN, Lieutenant Governor, arrived from Britain 6 to settle the Swan River Colony; and 7 B. Foundation Day is celebrated on the first Monday of 8 June each year to mark this important event for Western 9 Australians; and 10 C. Foundation Day acknowledges our indigenous people as 11 the original inhabitants and traditional custodians of the 12 land and unites all who have made Western Australia 13 their home, 14 it is, 182 years later, now appropriate that Foundation Day be 15 known as Western Australia Day. page 2 Western Australia Day (Renaming) Bill 2011 General Part 1 s. 1 1 Part 1 -- General 2 1. Short title 3 This is the Western Australia Day (Renaming) Act 2011. 4 2. Commencement 5 This Act comes into operation as follows -- 6 (a) sections 1 and 2 -- on the day on which this Act 7 receives the Royal Assent; 8 (b) the rest of the Act -- on the day after that day. 9 3. Renaming 10 (1) This Act renames Foundation Day to Western Australia Day. 11 (2) A reference in any legislative or other instrument to Foundation 12 Day may be read as referring to Western Australia Day, unless 13 in the context it is inappropriate to do so. page 3 Western Australia Day (Renaming) Bill 2011 Part 2 Consequential amendments Division 1 Public and Bank Holidays Act 1972 amended s. 4 1 Part 2 -- Consequential amendments 2 Division 1 -- Public and Bank Holidays Act 1972 amended 3 4. Act amended 4 This Division amends the Public and Bank Holidays Act 1972. 5 5. Second Schedule amended 6 In the Second Schedule delete "Foundation Day" and insert: 7 8 Western Australia Day 9 10 Division 2 -- Minimum Conditions of Employment 11 Act 1993 amended 12 6. Act amended 13 This Division amends the Minimum Conditions of Employment 14 Act 1993. 15 7. Schedule 1 amended 16 In Schedule 1 delete "Foundation Day." and insert: 17 18 Western Australia Day. 19
