LAW VIA THE INTERNET CONFERENCE 2005 - REGISTER ONLINE

The Pacific Islands Legal Information Institute (PacLII), in conjunction with the Australasian Legal Information Institute (AustLII), will host the 7th 'Law via Internet' Conference on 17-19 November 2005 in Vila, Republic of Vanuatu. Previous Law via Internet Conferences have been held in Sydney (1997, 1999, 2001, 2003), Montreal (2002) and Paris (2004).

Law via the Internet 2005 will present both submitted and invited papers. The Conference will be preceded by the annual meeting of the Free Access to Law Movement on 17 November, and the conference proper will take place on 18-19 November.

CALL FOR PAPERS

This year we hope to have a particular focus on the following areas: encouraging free access to law in developing countries; Europe's moves toward coordinated free access to law; social impact of access to legal information; legislation systems; search techniques for legal information; and innovative research uses of online legal data. The Conference venue is the Emalus Campus at the University of the South Pacific in beautiful Port Vila, capital of Vanuatu. NATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAMME: FREE ACCESS RESOURCES

The Internet Legal Research - Free Access Resources course, presented in conjunction with CLE at UNSW, is being held in:

This day long course provides a systematic introduction to Australian and international legal materials on the Internet, with an emphasis on those materials available for free access. The huge variety of free-access digital resources that have become available in recent years make them indispensable both to those who depend on free access, and to those who also have access to the commercial legal publishers' services. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AT AUSTLII

We currently have a couple of positions vacant at AustLII for systems and project officers. These officers will be responsible for the development and maintenance of AustLII and WorldLII databases as well as developing AustLII and WorldLII systems and software. We are seeking applicants with strong skills in computer science. A background in law is highly desirable.

We are also seeking a training and external relations officer. This position will take a leading role in the development and delivery of AustLII's national training programme in Internet legal research. This position will also assist in maintaining and developing AustLII's relationships with its key stakeholders. Applicants require a sound knowledge of the legal profession, legal publishing, and information technology. Good communications skills, and experience in training are essential.

AUSTLII TOOLBAR - AN UPDATE

The AustLII Toolbar has been updated and is now also available for the Mozilla Firefox web browser, in addition to the Netscape/Mozilla and Microsoft Internet Explorere web browsers.

The Toolbar allows you to search AustLII from any website page. It includes the AustLII menu which lists links for most of the major category materials for all Australasian jurisdictions. The toolbar also has buttons to link to the other Legal Information Institutes.
