Topic: Convergent literacies - legal research, legal informatics and legal education
Speaker: Paul Maharg, Professor of Law, ANU College of Law
Duration: The seminar lasts for an hour, including 20 minutes for discussion.

Abstract

Legal research has occupied an uneasy place in the legal curricula of common law jurisdictions. It is often classed as a skill, and practised in introductory subjects such as Introduction to Law or some such. Its physical locale is uncertain, too, sited between lecture hall and library and digital spaces online. Latterly, it has been recast as legal information literacy. In this presentation I shall argue that open and free resources such as AUSTLII could have a key role to play in the digital domain where the three fields of legal information literacies, legal informatics and legal education are sited. All three need to converge their interests if they are to gain status in the law school hierarchy of knowledge. I shall explore how studies in New Media on media convergence give us models for such convergence, and can show us the effects that the process may bring about. In the seminar we shall explore some of these models, and briefly consider some examples of innovation in all three fields.
