Seminar Details

Topic: What's in a name? (with apologies to Mr Shakespeare, aka Mr "Smith") - anonymising Family Court of Australia judgments
Speaker: Lyn Newlands, Judgments Publication Coordinator, Family Court of Australia
Duration: The seminar lasts for an hour, including 20 minutes for discussion.

Abstract

This presentation will briefly outline the reasons for the anonymisation of Family Court of Australia judgments prior to their publication on the internet. It will then describe the process undertaken by Judgments Publication Office staff to remove any information, including contextual information, that might lead to identification of the parties and their children, without disturbing the integrity of the Judges' reasons.

Biographical Note

Lyn Newlands has a background in law librarianship, commencing in the Minter Ellison library in 1988. She began work at the Family Court as a library officer in 2001 and, since 2007, has been the Court's Judgments Publication Coordinator.
